Corporate Intelligence Network Development

SIS International (acronym for Strategic Intelligence Systems) — the innovator of the ‘Corporate Intelligence Network’ — develops corporate knowledge and Intelligence-sharing networks

“The organizations with fully developed information networks will have an important advantage over their competitors…The inability to gain rapid access to internal corporate intelligence translates into a significant loss for the corporation.”
---Ruth Stanat, founder of SIS International, in “The Intelligent Corporation”,1989

Developing Corporate / Strategic Intelligence Networks

The founder of SIS International, Ruth Stanat headed strategic planning departments at International Paper, Chase Manhattan Bank and the Mars Corporation. During her tenure, Stanat developed Corporate Intelligence Networks to facilitate knowledge sharing of strategic information inside corporations before the Internet. The principle was that rapid knowledge sharing and communication across divisions enhances the ability to compete---a principle espoused by the world’s most competitive militaries. SIS develops these networks to:

  1. Share efficiently information, eliminating management “silos” and “fiefdoms”

  2. Turn information gluts into meaningful analysis ready for decision making

  3. Create accessible knowledge networks of decision-supporting experts to be able to share expertise across the firm

  4. Harness information to become more competitive in today’s highly competitive business environment

Today, SIS works with marketing divisions, information systems managers, strategic planners and corporate libraries to develop strategic intelligence networks. SIS International has a 10-stage process for the implementation and maintenance of Strategic Intelligence Networks. In developing strategic intelligence networks, SIS International’s approach consists of some of the following:

  • Development of Intelligence Networks
  • Information flow tracking
  • Intelligence Network Architecture Design
  • Strategic Information Audit for discovering information needs
  • Technology Infrastructure
  • Measuring Intelligence Network Effectiveness
  • Identifying Internal Champions to lead the Intelligence
  • Network
  • Organizing the Intelligence Network
  • Countering Security Threats

Case Study:

SIS International developed an automated intelligence system for a major bank. Previously, the strategic planning, research and intelligence functions were not integrated, with a wide variety of syndicated studies, customized studies, industry periodicals, internally generated reports and other files (including clippings of competitors’ ads, research from ad firms and focus group findings). The company needed a customized solution because of its personnel, who had varying needs for the amount detail, and because of its need for the solution to evolve over time.

SIS began by capturing relevant information. The team analyzed and synthesized all of the company’s strategic information across divisions. SIS created a system with which to share it with the rest of the corporation. New Intelligence functions were added to enhance strategic planning. The outcome was a system with “internal champions” that lead the intelligence network and with a system that summarized meaningful intelligence. This total solution eliminated costly duplication of research, enhanced interdepartmental knowledge-sharing and provided a competitive advantage long term.
